Not every day can be jammed packed with activities worth writing about. Today would very much be proof of that. That’s not to say that today was a bad day. Or an unproductive day. Neither could be further from the truth. There just wasn’t a whole lot of blog-worthy material to draw on for today. That said, I’m sure I’ll still find a way to write a paragraph or six.

With the pull of Vancouver growing stronger every day, I was only going to spend one night in Kelowna. However, I was determined to cut into the backlog of updates that has once again built up. And so, with my aunt and uncle willing to put up with me for another day, I planned on making this a productive day on the computer.

A day off in West Kelowna.

A day off in West Kelowna.

There was only one minor hiccup to my plan and that was the lack of internet connectivity at my temporary West Kelowna home. Fortunately, and not at all surprisingly, there is a Tim Hortons just down the road – and with it a Wendy’s. Yes, my home office was not going to have a shortage of food today.

And so, after taking a quick shopping run with my uncle to restock my supply of trail mix and CLIF Bars, I found myself at Wendy’s. Typing updates. Reviewing photos. And eating a chocolate Frosty. Or two. Throw in a little freelance work and the next five hours just flew by.

I think the biggest surprise of the day isn’t that I sat at Wendy’s for five hours but that I did so while limiting my Frosty intake to two. I’d say willpower won out but upon further reflection I’m not sure what the prize was.

Oh, there was one other item of note. As the evening was drawing to a close there was an impromptu visit from Jennifer, Jill, and Devon. Three granddaughters of my aunt and uncle. Which of course raised the ever-challenging question, “What relation are they to me?” It’s a question that remains unanswered. So, are there any genealogy experts reading? If so, here are the facts: I’m a first cousin to the two mothers of the three girls. What is my relation to said girls? (Cue the Final Jeopardy theme)

    Hi Mark,

I ran across your page in a search for a good picture of the West Kelowna sign. With that said I was wondering if you would allow me to use your picture?

    Thanks,
    Josh

Good question! Here’s what I learned:

    First cousins, once removed.
Your uncle’s child is your first cousin. The children of your first cousins are your first cousins, once removed. “Removed” always refers to a difference in generations on the the family tree.

Second cousins are people with whom you share a great-grandparent, just as first cousins are people with whom you share a grandparent.

Thanks Jannine. Sounds right to me! Mystery solved. I guess that means we need a new mystery. I’ll see what I can come up with.
