How’d That Happen?

Crescent City, CA

It’s hard to believe but somehow it’s September. How is that summer can pass so quickly and winter seems to last forever? Perhaps it has something to do with not living further south. Hopefully my plan of heading in that direction will extend the all-too-short summer season as it did last year.

Today was pretty much a nothing day. The original plan of hitting the road early didn’t happen. Not only did I not get on the road early, but I didn’t get on the road at all. At least, not in terms of making progress towards San Diego.

Instead, I made a few modifications to my bike – nothing crazy like racing stripes or anything like that. Just reattaching my water bottle and trip computer. From there I sorted though my panniers and did a bit of reorganizing. Again, nothing major.

I ventured out briefly to get some groceries for the road although, that was only mildly successful. On the upside, I bought some more Franz Bake Shop Creme Pies. So good. And so many calories. Very few of those calories are of the healthy variety which is why I’m sure they taste so good.

How sad.

Despite my general lack of physical activity, I ended up cooking up a pretty sizeable serving of pasta for dinner. The first actual cooking I’ve done in quite some time. I’d been carrying the pasta in my panniers for quiet a while and, since I don’t have any fuel for my stove, I figure it’s kind of silly to be carrying around dry pasta. That said, I probably didn’t need to cook as much as I did. And yet, I ate it all.

Unrelated, did I mention that I really like granola and yogurt. Not a grand revelation but just thought I’d mention it. I forgot to mention it earlier, but that was my breakfast. Again, probably didn’t need to eat as much as I did.

Changing topics yet again, all my gear is dry again although I still haven’t done laundry so I don’t recommend travelling downwind of me.

There’s no confirmed destination for tomorrow so I’ll likely ride until I get tired. Hopefully there will be a favourable wind. Given how that’s worked out so far, I won’t hold my breath (except while putting on my shirt). Phew! I’m hoping to get an early start tomorrow even though that will likely mean missing a chance to get a photo with my host, Katie. Once again, we’ll see what happens in the morning.
