One Last Day In Vancouver

Vancouver, BC

Pannier chaos!

Pannier chaos!

With Phase 2 of my journey on the horizon, today was a get-down-to-business kind of day. No cycling. No sightseeing. No gratuitous photos. Okay, maybe a few photos. Tomorrow I’ll be heading over to Vancouver Island which will be the final chapter of my westerly cross-Canada ride. From there, I’ll turn left and begin a southerly journey along the Pacific coast. Destination: San Diego. But before embarking on Phase 2, there was some work to be done.

The pedals which I bought yesterday needed to be installed, so that was task number one. I also wanted to organize some of my gear and repack my panniers. When the day started, it sort of looked like my panniers had exploded leaving my belongings scattered in a chaotic mess. Finally, I wanted to attack the backlog of blog entries that has built up since my arrival in Vancouver.

Another stressful day of work.

Another stressful day of work.

I’ll spare you the details on how each task progressed. Suffice it to say, it was a successful day. The pedal installation was borderline effortless. As for my panniers, they are once again organized – I even managed to throw a few things out. Although, somehow they feel heavier. I have no explanation. With those tasks completed, I set myself up on the porch to get some work done on my blog. It was a very nice setting to do some work.

I have since moved back inside and, as I type this update, I’m listening to music that is emanating from Jan and Rick’s Wurlitzer jukebox stocked with a wide range of 45s – the current song of choice is The Rolling Stones’ You Can’t Always Get What You Want. Generally speaking, I believe there’s a lot of truth in that song. However, during my stay with Jan and Rick I have wanted for nothing. To say that they have been overwhelming generous and fun to hang out with wouldn’t even begin to cover it. When I first contacted them I was thrilled when they agreed to host me for two nights. Incredibly, tonight will be my FIFTH night. It will also be my last. The open road is calling once again and when that happens I feel obliged to answer. Plus, if I stay here any longer, Jan and Rick might start charging me rent!

Oh, and I know I said there was no cycling today but I had to make a quick trip over to The UPS Store to send out a package. It was a very short ride, but it was also very enjoyable as the weather was fantastic again today. Hopefully tomorrow will bring more of the same.

Today’s totals:
Distance travelled: 6.6 km
Ride time: 23:42
Average speed: 16.70 km/h
Maximum speed: 51.54 km/h
