Happy Halloween

I wasn’t sure what was in store for me today, but the one thing I did know was that I would be having eggs for breakfast. I know, not exactly earth shattering news. But these would be eggs cooked by me on my Trangia stove. After four months on the road, today would be the day I finally find out how well the lid of my pot works as a frying pan. Just to be clear, the lid is intended to be used as a frying pan as it has some sort of non-stick surface on it. I kept my expectations low for these home cooked eggs, I mean, without butter, cheese, or even salt and pepper, these eggs could only be so good.

So, with my expectation set sufficiently low, I fired up the stove and placed the lid (aka. frying pan) onto the flame. A couple of cracked eggs later, the pan was sizzling with Eggs à la Mark. So far so good. I think the process was aided somewhat by the fact that it was a fairly windy morning which limited how much constant heat the stove could generate. A few minutes after adding the eggs to the pan it was time to flip them. A spatula would’ve been helpful. With no spatula to be found I resorted to using a plastic spoon – the only utensil I could find. It wasn’t the greatest flip in the world but it got the job done. A minute or so later, the eggs were resting comfortably in a whole wheat bagel and ready to be served. The verdict? An overwhelming success. As I mentioned earlier, butter, salt, pepper, cheese, oh, and bacon, would’ve improved things but given the limited ingredients (ie. eggs) it was a definitely a successful test.

The dragonfly and the wind.

As you may have gathered, today was a somewhat slow day – two paragraphs about me cooking breakfast is a dead giveaway. The wind was a bit strong today so not particularly ideal for flying – but pretty good for cooking eggs outdoors. As a result, most of my day was spent working on my computer doing various tasks that were significantly less interesting than my egg cooking experiment – which, let’s face it, wasn’t all that interesting.

Despite the lack of physical activity, the afternoon went by very quickly. Surprisingly quickly. And before I knew it, evening had set in. And it turned out to be a very entertaining evening of about twelve of us hanging out in the clubhouse. I met a few more new people, played some pool, got to hear Kim re-tell her tale of yesterday’s adventurous (and entertaining) encounter with a cloud en route to her first cross country flight, and later in the evening there were even some “frog shooters” consumed. Details of that last one aren’t really necessary. The important part is that a good time was had by all.
