Cod Tongues and “What Next?”
If all goes this will be my last update from Newfoundland. After leaving my bike at the shop on Monday I was finally reunited with my tuned up bike this afternoon. Which means, after five days in St. John’s, it’s time to address the “What next?” question.
If Toronto to St. John’s was officially Phase 1, the answer to “What next?” would be Phase Two. I’m still working on some of the details but for starters I’m going to head to Halifax. In order to do that I’m going to take the 13-16 hour ferry from Argentia to North Sydney, then hit the road and pedal my way down to Halifax. I suspect this will be particularly challenging as I believe the prevailing wind will be in my face for most of the ride.
With today shaping up to being my last day in St. John’s, there were still a couple of things I was hoping to do before moving on: 1. try cod tongues, and; 2. get Screeched-In. The former I took care of at lunch but the latter (spoiler alert) didn’t end up happening. As described on Wikipedia, the “screech-in” is a ceremony performed on non-Newfoundlanders involving a shot of screech (high alcohol rum), a short recitation and the kissing of a cod. The plan for this evening was to head down to George St. to take in some live music and a beer or two, and at some point get screeched-in. We started off at a bar called Green Sleeves, having a beer and watching watching a guy with a guitar singing some songs. We ended up at a bar called O’Reilly’s watching some very entertaining live music, drinking another beer or two, and eating some fish and chips. By the time we left though, I’d kind of forgotten about the screech-in ceremony and didn’t remember until I was almost home. Going back didn’t really seem to make sense – especially since tomorrow I’ll be getting back on the bike to resume my ride. My screech-in will have to wait until next time.« Toutons, Birch Beer, and Waiting (Previous Post)
