Day XIII – Georgia On My Mind

Well, as you may have guessed, I’m now in Georgia. I was in Tennessee briefly but now I’m back in Georgia. And who knew Georgia would be so cold! It was -2 Celsius this morning. I thought I came south to get away from that kind of weather!

Yesterday was a driving day – another 880km in the books.

Once again my plans changed a bit when I got here when I found out that Lookout Mountain Hang Gliding is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays – highly unfortunate with today being Wednesday.

So, having a free day I headed to the internet to find “Things To Do in Chattanooga” (which is the biggest city around here). As you might imagine, the list was pretty short. I ended up going to Rock City. It was okay. Some nice scenic views but a little too structured for my personal tastes – and far too many “Please stay on the trail” signs. I mean, all those rocks and I couldn’t climb any of them. How sad.

Launching from Lookout Mountain

Launching from Lookout Mountain

After Rock City I headed back to Lookout Mountain to see if anyone was doing any gliding and I was pleasantly surprised to see that gliders were in the air. I watched a couple of launches and ended up meeting Kit (from Lookout Mountain Hang Gliding). He put me in touch with an instructor (Scott) and what started as a non-flying day ended with some launch training on the small hill. Things went well in that regard so I’ve been given the “Good to go” for a mountain launch.

So, tomorrow I’ll head over to the office and see what needs to happen to get me fully cleared to run off the mountain (other than checking my sanity).
